General Register Office for Scotland- The General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) is the department of the devolved Scottish Administration responsible for the registration of births, marriages, deaths, divorces, and adoptions in Scotland. It is responsible for the Census which it uses, with other sources of information, to produce population statistics. It makes available important information for family history.

Irregular Border and Scottish Runaway Marriages- Irregular marriages were entered into by persons who took advantage of the principle in Scots Law that marriage was constituted by mutual consent. This led to a thriving marriage business just within the Scottish Border for English couples who eloped together to marry in Scotland. Registers were kept, but are not held centrally and indeed the whereabouts of some is unknown. This online leaflet provides details of the extant registers and their current (or last known) location.
